Jimi Hendrix:
The undisputed king of acid blues himself! Jimi Hendrix
was born in Seattle, Washington but got his big break in England in the
late 1960s after teaming up with Mitch Mitchell (drums) and Noel Redding
(bass). He got very little notice as the guitarist for Joey Dee and the
Starlighters (many of whom later became The Rascals) and for his work with
Little Richard but grew to dominate the psychadelic rock scene just a few
years later, becoming a good friend to Eric
Clapton and generally loved by all he encountered. Although he passed
from this life a few years before I was born, I still find myself referring
to him as "Brother Jimi" quite often. Some of his best works (IMHO) include
the studio tracks: The Wind Cries Mary, Third Stone from the Sun, The Burning
of the Midnight Lamp and his cover of All Along the Watchtower (penned
by Bob Dylan and featuring Dave Mason on rhythm guitar). I would also recommend
an awesome live album: Jimi Plays Monterey. That album contains not only
his famous and destructive cover of Wild Thing but also a blistering performance
of his rendition of The Killing Floor. As with many fires that burn brightly
from their beginnings, Jimi burned out ahead of his time from aspiration
caused by a drug overdose. However, Jimi lives on and if remembering the
dead and speaking of them causes them live once more, he is truly immortal.
